DECATUR WRECK - Early this morning a man driving a SUV pulled in front of a rock hauler at the intersection of U.S. 81/287 and U.S. 380 in Decatur. The accident occurred at 3:40 a.m. The driver of the SUV failed to yield at the stop sign at the bottom of the ramp leading from U.S. 81/287 North onto U.S. 380. He drove into the cab of a westbound tractor-trailer. The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries. He had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was flown to a Fort Worth hospital. Invest

NO TAX INCREASE - The Wise County Water Control and Improvement District won't be raising its property tax rate this year. Directors agreed to a 2010 budget Tuesday and decided its property tax rate of a penny per $100 valuation will remain unchanged. WCID primarily funds cost-share projects with landowners for erosion control and water resource preservation. Its new budget goes into effect May 1 and will be similar to last year's, said Chairman Lou Vee Bridges.

ELECTION DAY - Polls in the Republican and Democratic primary elections opened at 7 a.m. today and will remain open until 7 p.m. A full list of polling locations was in Sunday's Wise County Messenger and online at www.wcmessenger.com/election. TAKE CARE OF WARRANTS - Newark will join more than 250 law enforcement jurisdictions from across Texas for the "Great Texas Warrant Roundup," which begins Saturday. Officers will arrest people with outstanding warrants pending before their respective municipal courts. Notices have been mailed to persons with active warrants. SWAP MEET IS HERE - The Wise County Antique Auto Club's Swap Meet is 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Sunday at the Wise County Sheriff's Posse Grounds. Thousands of vendors and visitors are expected to arrive in Decatur for the annual event.

FIRE RULED ARSON - Wise County Fire Marshal Marc Dodd has ruled arson as the cause of the fire at a vacant house in Newark early Monday. Dodd said Wednesday afternoon that the case remains under investigation. Newark, Rhome and Boyd firefighters extinguished the fire that gutted a house in the 300 block of County Road 4856.

BOYD'S NOTE - On Monday night, Boyd's school board accepted a bid from SAMCO Capital Markets for a $3,050,000 maintenance tax note. The winning bid gave the district an interest rate of 3.45 percent on a 15-year note. The interest rate is locked and the district can pay the note in full in 2015 without penalty. The note will cost the district $260,000 per year. The note will free up general funds to help pay for Boyd's new football stadium, which is predicted to cost more than $7 million.

MURPHREE CASE VERDICT - After a full day of deliberation Monday, the jury found in favor of Jackie Murphree in a civil suit that has played out in 271st District Court over the past two weeks. They found the bulk of the responsibility to center on Betty A. Monroe, an intoxicated driver who crashed into Jackie more than two years ago. DECATUR FIRE - Fire gutted an unoccupied house in the 600 block of West Mill Street in Decatur early Sunday morning. Firefighters from Decatur, Bridgeport and Rhome battled the blaze that was reported at 1:37 a.m. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 5:30 a.m. Decatur Fire Marshal Deroy Bennett said Sunday afternoon that he is still investigating the cause of the fire. BUSINESS FIRE - The Bridgeport Fire Department responded to a fire at Daily Donuts on Turkey Creek Trail in the city shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday. The fire appears to have started in the attic and firefighters attacked hot spots in the attic shortly after arriving on scene. The business had closed for the day at 12:15 p.m.

CITY RESPONDS TO COMPLAINTS - After hearing complaints Tuesday from residents about the city's electric utility service, the City of Bridgeport announced a plan Wednesday to address those concerns. According to a news release, the city plans to create an Electric Utility Advisory Committee consisting of local residents, staff and a council representative to provide direction and suggestions to the city council on electric utility issues; send two electric department employees to energy audit tra

CHARGED UP CROWD - Citizens packed the Bridgeport City Hall council chamber Tuesday night to express concerns over high electric bills. The City of Bridgeport provides electricity to residents. Many residents and business owners were concerned that while they had taken steps to decrease usage, their bill continued to climb. Some residents said they could not pay and would not pay their bill.

EARLY VOTING BEGINS - Today is the first day of early voting for the March 2 primary election. Polls are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Decatur Civic Center.

DEATH INVESTIGATION - A body was found inside a home destroyed in a Friday night fire. The Arson Task Force is investigating the death of the unknown person found in a mobile home on County Road 2872. Alvord, Decatur and Montague County firefighters battled the blaze in northern Wise County Friday night, with the call coming in after 10. The home was fully involved with a collapsed roof at the firefighters' arrival. The cause of the fire and cause of death is unknown at this time.

RECORD SNOWFALL - Parts of Wise County received up to a foot of snow yesterday as North Texas set a record for most snowfall in one day. The greatest snowfall reports include 12 inches in Runaway Bay and 11.5 inches in Cottondale. With temperatures this morning falling below freezing, slick and icy spots have been created on roads, making traveling difficult. Motorists are urged to use caution or not travel until after the temperature warms above freezing.
