RARE RAINY DAY - Parts of Wise County received several inches of rain yesterday and overnight as thunderstorms rolled through the area. The Wednesday afternoon storm caused some damage, including a report of a powerline down on Hitt Street in Boyd. Minor flooding was also reported in parts of Decatur, including on U.S. 380 near U.S. 81/287. Weatherwatchers in Rhome and Newark were activated around 5:15 to be on the lookout for possible tornadic activity. Rainfall totals included 4.19 inches in D

PLEA REJECTED - Stephen York of Bridgeport yesterday rejected a plea offer from prosecutors in his capital murder case. York, who was arrested following a high speed chase in April of 2009 that ended with a crash that killed Bridgeport Police Sgt. Randy White, had been offered life without the chance for parole by prosecutors if he pleaded guilty. District Attorney Greg Lowery said that since the plea offer was rejected, the state will seek the death penalty at trial. The trial was set for Jan.

TAX BREAK - Citizens of Decatur will get a one-cent property tax break. The Wise County Water Supply District, which serves the city of Decatur, is proposing a 13.5-cent tax rate, down a penny. Coupled with the city council's plan to keep its 64-cent rate, property owners will benefit from a combined decrease.

ALVORD VETERANS PARK - The city of Alvord will soon have a place to honor veterans. The city council agreed last week to allow the Alvord Veterans Memorial Committee to build a memorial in Elm Creek Park to honor veterans from the city. The structure would be 100 square feet with descending height walls. Estimated cost is $28,000 to be raised by the committee. They have $3,000 and plan to have the remainder raised within three years. A groundbreaking ceremony will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25

FOOTBALL SEASON - This is the first night of Friday night football, and all seven local teams will be in action. Alvord will host Millsap, Boyd will host Godley, Bridgeport travels to Glen Rose, Chico will play at Perrin-Whitt, Decatur will be at Whitesboro, Northwest is at home against Carrollton Creekview and Paradise is at Venus. BUDGET TALK - A public hearing on the Decatur school district's proposed budget and tax rate is 7 tonight at the administration building. The district is proposing a tax rate of $1.30 per $100 valuation, one cent lower than the current tax rate of $1.31. The tax rate decrease would result in a savings of about $10 for the owner of a home with a taxable value of $103,940, the average taxable value of homes in the district.

NEW TRUCK FOR CONSTABLE - Precinct 2 Constable Leonard Denney will soon be serving papers from a pickup instead of a car. Commissioners Monday approved the purchase of the pickup after Denney complained that his county-issued Dodge Charger was not suited for many of the driveways and roads on which he travels to serve papers. Denney was able to cover the bulk of the expense, $23,000, with money from his own budget. The vehicle cost $26,861, and there were to be additional costs to equip the truc

DEALERSHIP FIRE - Fire damaged James Wood Motors in Decatur last night. Fire departments responded to the call around 7:50 and found heavy black smoke coming from the service shop area. At least one car inside was on fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within an hour. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause, but Decatur Fire Marshal Deroy Bennett said the fire most likely started with a vehicle fire in the northwest corner of the shop.

COTTONDALE WRECK - Two people were sent to the hospital following a single-car accident on Spring Valley Road in Cottondale at 6:30 Sunday morning. According to investigating officers, Erika Enriquez, 23, said she swerved to avoid hitting a deer and collided with a tree. She was not hurt. Passengers Raul Enriquez, 18, and Jessica Enriquez, 17, were transported by ambulance to Wise Regional Health System with minor injuries.

DECATUR ACCIDENT - A Decatur man was injured in a two-vehicle accident at U.S. 81/287 and U.S. 380 in Decatur yesterday around 11 p.m. The local man driving an SUV was exiting northbound U.S. 81/287 to U.S. 380 when a pickup driven by an Oklahoma man attempted to travel the wrong way on the ramp and collided with the SUV. NO NEW FIREMEN - Decatur City Council massaged the 2011 budget to fit three new firemen, but backed off the plan over concerns the new positions might make next year's budget more difficult. The budget won't be formally adopted until Sept. 13, and the council will work on it again Monday. But it appears the property tax rate will stay at 64 cents, and city employees will get a two percent pay raise. Other capital expenses proposed include new police cars.

HOUSE FIRE - Six fire departments responded to a house fire west of Boyd around 11:15 yesterday morning. A double-wide mobile home and three outbuildings were severely damaged in the fire. A grassfire also spread around the property, located in the 300 block of County Road 4593. Boyd, Paradise, Cottondale, Newark, Rhome and Springtown departments responded to the fire. The cause is under investigation, and no one was at the home when firefighters arrived.

SAVING A FEW BUCKS - Wise County Commissioners yesterday set the county tax rate for fiscal year 2011 at 38 cents per $100 valuation. This is slightly less than the current rate of 38.87. The decreased rate means an almost $9 savings for a taxpayer with a homestead valued at $100,000. They also proposed a Wise County Weatherford College branch campus maintenance tax for fiscal year 2011 of 4.7791 cents per $100 valuation, which is the effective rate. RELIEF FROM THE HEAT? - Parts of Wise County received a brief respite from the heat late yesterday afternoon with some rain showers. Decatur received 0.75 of an inch. Some damage was reported, including a tree that fell on a car at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur. No one was injured. The break may continue today as a chance of showers are in the forecast with a high in the upper 90s.

RHOME BANS K2 - Last night Rhome became the first city in Wise County to ban the sale or use of K2. Possession or distribution can result in a fine of up to $2,000. The council voted unanimously on the new law. K2 is sold as an incense at most tobacco shops but is commonly used as a marijuana substitute. No businesses in Rhome sell it.

FATAL OVERNIGHT WRECK - A Decatur woman was killed in a single-vehicle accident early this morning on U.S. 380 west of Bridgeport near Farm Road 1658 West. The female driver, whose name is being withheld until the family is notified, was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Terri Johnson at 1:56 a.m. A male passenger, Ryan Pinson, 38, of Decatur was transported by ambulance to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur. NOT IN A GIVING MOOD - Wise County Commissioners had one answer yesterday morning - "no." In a budget workshop, commissioners denied Precinct 1 Constable Tom Bishop's request for a new vehicle, but Commissioner Kevin Burns said there is contingency money in the budget that could be used if the car quits running. TRAFFIC DELAYS - Expect traffic delays today and tomorrow around Bridgeport. The Texas Department of Transportation will start paving Texas 101 north of Bridgeport between the TXI Plant and Chico today. Paving will begin Tuesday on Texas 114 between Farm Road 2123 and Farm Road 3259.

BLOWOUT SPARKS FIRE - Fire departments in the southern part of Wise County responded to a large grass fire call shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday. Fires were reported along Farm Road 730 from Farm Road 2048, also known as Keeter Road, to the Briar area. Smoke caused visibility problems on FM 730, and traffic was shut down. The fire was caused when an unidentified female driver blew out a tire on a pickup truck. She continued to drive for miles south on FM 730, spewing a shower of sparks into the dit
